Lyrical Light

Lyrical Light invokes the spirit of movement, which is a common element of all the performing arts. Suspended from the ceiling in the riverfront foyer of the Florida Times Union Center, a stainless steel framework creates soft lyrical lines out of which glass ribs extend into multiple directions, each ending in a dramatic crescendo of captured and refracted light. The alternating spirals within the work provide a strong juxtaposition of fluid line, which counter balances, the staccato, linear architectural style of the Florida Times Union and the downtown skyline.

The color of the glass used in the work will be a mix of clear and transparent blues simulating water. Blue, also symbolic of corporate America, links Lyrical Light with the surrounding business culture as well as the riverfront environment. The luminosity of glass creates a strong presence during both day and night, as well as a changing quality of light depending on weather conditions and season.

Lyrical Light is comprised of two 40’ and one 20’ long (2.5” diameter) stainless steel pipes. Each undulating line of steel is secured in three places to the overhead structural “I” beams. Attached to this steel framework is a series of paired 5’ long sculpted glass ribs which radiate from the metal midline. Fabricated as a series of units, each glass component is secured under compression into a clamping mechanism, which is bolted to the steel pipe.
