The Three Graces
| The work entitled “The Three Graces" are three figures graceful and playful depicting movement through water. The Three Graces of Greek mythology represented Beauty, Joy and Nature. Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia, three daughters of Zeus known as the Graces, were said to have entertained the gods with their song and dance. The Florida Times Union Center is a place for the celebration of life through the arts of theater, dance and music. Each of these disciplines utilizes "movement" in a symbolic manner. Music and water are much alike in that they flow and have a rhythm. Dancing is like swimming in that each is a way to move with a fluid rhythm. The design tries to capture the movement of life, water and the figure. The work comprises of three 7ft figures, each made of silk with a glass bodice surrounded by 2,000 glass spheres organized into waves that make up a cloudlike mass. The figures are arranged in graceful poses resembling those found in swimming and dance. Together the figures form a circle placed into a cloud of blue glass spheres reminiscent of layers of notes together to complete a harmony but also to simulate water the symbol of life. |
