A Symphony of Birds

The Florida Times Union Center has a beautiful view of the St. John’s River from the Kesler Waterfront Plaza. Symphony of Birds is an artwork that will bring the outdoor beauty of the river indoors. This work captures the dynamic flight patterns created by birds as they move through the sky. In my artwork I use glass forms to illustrate the unity of movement through the energy expressed by nature, music and dance.
Nature has its own symphony of sound that flows with the rhythm of the river and the movements of its inhabitants. These patterns are created in a three-dimensional way by lines of glass spheres representing quanta or energy packets. The lines of energy that form these birds are reminiscent of the vibrant energy of musical patterns in unity with the movement of dance. This concept of the waves of sound, dance, and the river illustrates the events and the environment of the Times Union Center.

Glass will be the main element of the artwork because of its transparent and luminescent qualities. In this piece the glass mimics the elements of the serene river view from inside the Florida Times Union Center. I plan to place five birds in this space and orient them to create the illusion that they are flying into the building from the outside. They will be constructed out of glass spheres supported by stainless steel frames. This design is self-supporting; all structural elements will be part of the artwork.

The spheres will vary in size and will be colored in shades of transparent blue. An estimated 1000 glass balls will cover the steel frame in a spiraling pattern. Welded to the frame will be attachment screws for each sphere. Each sphere will have a nut fitted into a hole, which will be unseen. The glass pieces then can be easily attached to the frames by simply screwing each sphere into place

The materials of this piece will complement the existing architecture of the Times Union Center. The stainless steel will be the color of the window frames and will recede into the background allowing the glass spheres to glow with natural light. The spheres will be in harmony with the colors of the river and the birds will appear to be soaring into the space, linking the observers with the natural beauty of the riverfront location.
