The Jacksonville University Department of Visual Arts is committed to providing comprehensive degree programs of excellence. The department’s programs of study seek to instill in students an understanding of the rich role of art in the human experience—past and present—and to develop in students artistic capabilities and aesthetic sensitivity. The majors the department offers prepare students for entry into careers as professional artists or art educators or for advanced, graduate study. JU’s faculty, with an impressive listing of artistic and scholarly achievements, is dedicated to the success of its students.

Facilities & Resources

A new Visual Art Annex housing drawing and painting studios, a state of the art glass facility, sculpture studios including a comprehensive wood and metal shop and a well equipped ceramics studio.

A state-of-the-art glass studio with four glory holes, slumping kilns, annealers and furnaces. One of the only glass facilities in the Southeast.

A well equipped clay studio including clay mixer, slab roller, extruder, and 12 electric wheels. The electric kiln room is equipped with three round paragons, a large oval and a small test kiln. Attached to the studio is a ventilated glaze formulation room equipped with all raw materials for clay and glaze experimentation. The outdoor kiln area includes two raku kilns and a gas fired cone 10 as well as pit and sager fire capabilities. 

Two complete photography darkrooms include 18 enlarging stations in black and white and 10 stations in color. A separate film processing and finishing studio supports the darkrooms. An additional space is set aside for lighting.

Internship & Career Opportunities

Interns from Jacksonville University have been placed in design studios, advertising agencies, television stations, printing firms, billboard and sign companies, newspapers, computer graphics firms, and various corporate advertising and public relations departments. This is an outstanding internship program which places students into working environments in the areas of advertising/graphic design, photography, computer art and museum work.
